how to clean earrings

How do you clean diamond earrings?

1. Place earrings in a bowl of warm water

2. Add unscented washing up liquid or soap

3. Mix them and move the earrings in the water - leave for up to 30 minutes

4. Rinse the earring and pat dry with a clean cloth

5. Use a children’s toothbrush to remove any leftover residue

Cleaning diamond earrings yourself sounds like a tricky task, but it’s actually quite simple. The process is surprisingly quick, bringing your jewellery back to its former glory within minutes. This is perfect for stud earrings, although you can also clean bigger earrings using this method with some extra care.

Step one: Start by putting your earrings in a small shallow bowl filled with warm water. Make sure you place the bowl on a smooth surface to reduce the chance of spilling the water and losing the earrings.

Step two: Add a few drops of plain unscented washing up liquid or soap, ensuring that the chosen solution has no added dyes or fragrances that could potentially damage the earrings.

Step three: Mix the solution carefully, moving the earrings around in the process. You should notice that any dirt on the surface of the earrings should lift off and rise to the surface. Leave them in this solution for up to half an hour, mixing them gently every now and again.

Step four: Rinse the earrings in clean, warm water before patting dry with a cloth. Using a new cloth ensures that there’s no lingering dirt or scents that could transfer to your diamond earrings.

Step five: If you can still spot some dirt, give the earrings a quick brush using a children’s toothbrush or any other small brush. Doing this allows you to sweep away any dirt that may have built up in the small crevices of the earrings, but make sure you brush as gently as possible.

All types of diamond earring can be cleaned using the above method. The type of metal doesn’t matter as long as you’re using a fragrance and dye-free solution. Watch out for extra strong jewellery cleaner and always read the label to ensure it can be used with your earrings.

Some will state what type of metal and diamond should be used with the solution, so avoid ruining your earrings by always double checking any product you put on them.

Tips and tricks for cleaning diamond earrings

Cleaning diamond earrings is easy, but there are a few ways to simplify the process even further.

Tip one: The most important of all is checking for any loose diamonds or areas that don’t feel secure before cleaning. It sounds obvious, but many people end up losing their precious diamonds when they don’t double check.

Tip two: Use a microfiber cloth or one made specifically for cleaning jewellery to ensure no lint ends up on your earrings.

Tip three: If you don’t have a really shallow bowl, you can use a colander with holes significantly smaller than your earrings to empty the water. Make sure you do this over a sink with a plug so they don’t go down the drain should they pop through the holes.

Tip four: Make sure all of the water and soap solution is rinsed off properly. Residue can leave your jewellery looking dull, so give it a thorough - but gentle - rinse with warm water.
